A useful software brief does not need to be technical. Start with the business problem, the people who will use the system and the decisions or tasks the software must make easier. Document the current workflow, where information comes from, what systems must connect, what data is sensitive and what “done” should mean. Separate must-have capabilities from later improvements. Identify who will approve decisions and who will own the system after launch. This gives a development team enough context to propose architecture, phases, cost ranges and delivery risks without guessing.
